Autumn 2024 fashion trends
September is pivotal for fashion, not because it's the most significant fashion week of the year, but because it always seems like the second half of the year—or that could just be me and the education system starting them—is when the autumn-winter trends come alive.
I do not know about you, but when I was told leopard print was back for this autumn, I suddenly saw it everywhere I went in all different shapes and sizes. Although I do not mind it, I believe it is a trend that won't last and is unsuitable for sustainability. It will be out of fashion, like padded shoulder patches, by next September. The leopard print is roaring back with vintage undertones to add some class, as featured in the Dior Show.
cool floral
Though florals and autumn do not match, having the cooler tones works more for the changing temperature and cold weather, with Erdem using these dark undertones for this autumn. The blooms are here to stay into those colder months, reflecting the change in season through the tones using flowers that could be found in an English garden project that aesthetic into the next season but with more wintry patterns.
Puplum baby doll.
I love all things poppin' and peplums. Creating that babydoll hourglass voluminous look, though sexy in showing the curves, always reminds me of principal dresses or even the one and only Barbie. The Peplum shirt for work and the bubble dress for the night: This sewing technique can be used for formal and evening wear settings and is a perfect staple.
Cape
Now, you can be your superhero with this next trend. You don’t need Superman or Batman with capes coming back in season with brands like Chloe, Bally, and totems presenting chic, classic capes that embrace elegance but also class and sophistication. With winter, these are more wool-neutral beige tones to go with the changing colour of the leaves, with its ladylike and vintage style, which is very feminist of the 70s capes and boleros of its time. Like all fashion trends, it comes in and out of fashion. This piece's peak popularity is sweeping the catwalks with the likes of Chloe as is classic or cocooned shapes at Missoni. This is one practical fashion trend perfect for autumn when just a jumper is not enough but a full coat is too hot; it's easy to take off and breathable. A fashion trend that is practical for the British autumn.
corporate value
September is not just a new fashion season; it feels like the second start of the year; school goes back, people start new jobs, and the summer vacations are over. So September is the perfect time to get that corporate wardrobe and fake it so you can make it. I don’t know about you, but I love to dress up from time to time. Once, while on a course, I was dressed in corporate wear on the train to London and felt like a commuter and a proper grown-up. I don’t need to tell you twice how giddy I felt. Designers are using this as a play on fashion, tying in with the corporate power and capitalism symbols of power, and designers are taking the power suit of the Wall Street men and placing it on the day women, showing that women can pull it off too.
70s boho
All the flares and ruffles about the peace-love movement are in full swing on and off the catwalk. It feels poetic that this boho look is back due to the conflicts occurring around the world. Did it truly leave? I have been wearing flares for years as they work with my body shape. But the ruffles and the muted earthy tones are back, holding the soft, warm tones.
