Decorating the house

“We can leave the Christmas decorations up until January…”

It does not matter how you do it with paper chains or fairy lights to bring the Christmas cheer around your house.

Christmas market

I have discussed this in more detail in my Christmas market guide. My dos and don’ts are unique, but the weather is not, so put on your layers, go Christmas shopping, and spend the evening socialising in the winter months. It gets you in the festive mood. I also think it would be nice if you're in the London area to do a Christmas market crawl like a pub crawl but with all the Christmas markets in London. Many countries have light shows/trials that you can attend. I have only been to the one at Waddesdon Manor, though it brings the magic of Christmas and is perfect for children as you can go at your own pace. However, you must go when it's dark, so if anything is past 4 p.m., it would help if you wrapped up warm. Some Places are pricier than others.

Christmas market recommendations

Christmas film

Get tucked under the duvet or blanket with hot chocolate and gingerbread, and watch Christmas films to get you in the festive spirit. This easy cost-effect is perfect for a stormy day or when you are ill or bored.

My recommendations

  • Love Actually
  • The holiday
  • Holidate
  • Santa Clause franchise
  • Elf
  • Grinch
  • Home Alone ( not my favourite got scarred by watching this as a young child and feared someone breaking into my house)

Christmas baking

From making your Christmas cake and pudding and then watering it with brandy on the run-up to the big day of making a gingerbread house. If you do not have the time to make your gingerbread, you can buy a kit from the supermarket and get extra decorations; this is perfect for friends. Maybe do a canape evening or board night in which everyone has a theme in which they bring a board that presents that like anything blue, and you can only bring blue food. There are so many Christmas activities around your town you could go to, from the Christmas choir to the Christmas-making evening.

Now you can make mince pies, a fruit mini pie with Christmas spices like cinnamon, or you could make something tasty. Gingerbread. I made them for my class; everyone loved them and returned them to me. I promise they wouldn’t if it was mince pies. The beauty of Christmas is that you can make a lot with gingerbread. I made a house, and I have a stencil from IKEA. You could cheat and buy a ready-made kit. I like seeing my dad struggle to put it together and put on so many heavy decorations that it starts to collapse. You can make so many things at a stable. Also, my recipe is so big that I get to make people.

Christmas Crafts

Now, we all did this and never actually looked like snowflakes, but the thought was that they would typically be on the windows of the classroom to show the snow coming down and our desire for a snow day so we didn't have to go to school.

Paper chains will be all over classroom ceilings throughout December. If there was an easy, affordable, and meaningful craft, this is what every primary school would do. You have undoubtedly done it; my parents did it as children, too; you can even put them on your tree, but I know that lights get warm, so you don’t want a fire hazard on your hands.

I would say the best place to get your

Christmas crafts from Hobby Crafts. They have packs for all age groups and abilities.

Christmas wreath

Many florists nationwide have workshops throughout the festive period where you can try wreath-making with all the equipment and support. This is perfect, whether you are crafty or not. It is a perfect activity with friends and family, and you get a beautiful wreath to hang on your front door and show off your hard work.

Christmas shopping

I am all for a Black Friday deal or an online steal, but I find more joy and an excuse to shop for gifts. Maybe a little for me. You can try things on, check things out, and make sure it's exactly how you want, and there's no need to pay for post and packaging and worry if anyone will be in when it gets delivered.

Ice Skating

It's one of the oldest Christmas traditions, but it's safer now on actual rinks, not ponds or lakes. I go to Winter Wonderland and Ice Skate every year, and it's beautiful. There are loads of ice skating rinks around the country, but in winter, you will see more temporary outside rings that are only open for the festive season. Also, what's not to love about seeing grown men stacking it while holding the side?
